Returning to Normal After Hurricane Beryl

Updated: Jul 16

Experiencing a hurricane can be an extremely stressful experience, with anxiety setting in even before the storm lands, and for some time after. This was a shared experience for many Houstonians as we prepared for hurricane Beryl.

Even with meteorologist tracking, there is always an air of unpredictability that can create uncertainty about how much preparation is needed to safely make it through the storm. Water, food, and other essentials all seem to fly off of the store shelves as people gather supplies for their families.

Our hearts go out to those affected by loss during the storm and who may be grieving. For those who may not have family within the area or are new to these types of storms, this can be a very isolating and scary experience.

Currently, power and gas are being restored, and the city is working hard to return its normalcy. Yet, as the city starts to function again, you might still find yourself worrying about the future and experiencing weather anxiety.

This anxiety may stem from various factors, including past traumatic experiences with severe weather, fear of the unknown, or a heightened sensitivity to environmental changes. We hope you can find the following practices helpful to ease some of the fear and stress.

1. Stay Informed, but Set Limits: While it's essential to stay informed about weather forecasts and potential hazards, it's equally important to set limits on how much information you consume.

Constantly checking weather updates or watching news coverage of storms can exacerbate anxiety. Set specific times to check forecasts, and then focus on other activities to distract yourself.

2. Create a Safety Plan: Feeling prepared can alleviate some of the anxiety associated with storms. Create a comprehensive safety plan that includes steps to take before, during, and after a severe weather event. Identify safe locations in your home, gather emergency supplies over time, and establish communication protocols with family members or neighbors.

3. Practice Relaxation Techniques: When feelings of anxiety arise, practice relaxation techniques to help calm your mind and body. Deep breathing exercises, progressive muscle relaxation, or mindfulness meditation can be effective in reducing stress and promoting a sense of calm and focus. Find what works best for you and incorporate these practices into your daily routine.

4. Focus on What You Can Control: While you can't control the weather, you can control how you respond to it. Instead of fixating on worst-case scenarios, focus on practical steps you can take to prepare for adverse weather conditions. Take proactive measures to safeguard your home, secure outdoor belongings, and ensure the safety of yourself and your loved ones.

5. Seek Support: Don't hesitate to reach out for support if you're struggling to manage weather-related anxiety on your own. Talk to friends, family members, or a mental health professional about your feelings and concerns.

Joining a support group or online community for individuals dealing with weather anxiety can also provide a sense of solidarity and understanding.

6. Practice Self-Care: During times of heightened anxiety, prioritize self-care activities that promote physical and emotional well-being. Engage in activities that you enjoy, such as exercise, hobbies, or spending time in nature.

Get plenty of rest, eat nutritious meals, and limit your intake of caffeine and alcohol, which can exacerbate anxiety symptoms. Most importantly, give yourself time- to process and to recuperate.

Beryl left many of us in a state of disorganization and stress. Weather anxiety is a common challenge faced by many individuals, especially in regions prone to heavy storm seasons. By implementing practical strategies for managing anxiety and building resilience, you can navigate through stormy times with greater ease and confidence.

Remember to stay informed, create a safety plan, practice relaxation techniques, focus on what you can control, seek support when needed, and prioritize self-care. By taking proactive steps to address weather anxiety, you can reclaim a sense of calm and empowerment in the face of uncertainty.
